Data perusal units are usually fashioned as thin, metallic headbands covered in visible circuitry that hold two small magical stones to the wearer’s temples. When in a region where an infosphere or some other form of data network is wirelessly accessible (most technologically average settlements and planets), a data perusal unit can instantly access, sort, and disseminate information from that infosphere according to your desires. A data perusal unit is automatically activated when you attempt a skill check to identify a creature, identify a spell, identify technology, or recall knowledge with a skill you aren’t trained in. Thanks to the instantaneous knowledge dump, you’re considered trained in that skill. More advanced models offer an additional bonus to the check.

With a Mk 2 unit you're considered trained in the skill being accessed, and gain a +2 enhancement bonus to this check.
